Summary: | meal "The long and hungry month of March" was a phrase that was not only often heard, but frequently pictured a harsh reality. As witness, this exerpt from the Colonial Secretary's records at St. John's, dated 19th March, 1868, states "fifteen barrels of meal and a quantity of molasses consigned to Mr. Burden, Chairman Road Board, Salvage, for the relief of destitute people until they go fishing was shipped by the Schr Ariel". That was the time when many necessities would be running low and rationing had to be carried out. There is no record of anyone starving in the new settlement, nor of [reverse] even closely approaching that state, but there were times when a bowl of Indian meal and molasses would have been gladly exchanged for a mouthful of a more balanced diet.
