"De disaster spring," for example, refers to 1914 when the _Newfoundland_ suffered such tragedy and the _Southern / Cross_ went down. "De spring o' the Wadhams" means a certain year when seals were very plentiful off the Wadham Islands. They speak of "me t'irty-t'ree springs" as we might of many years. Everything seems to be reckoned by springs.
