Sometimes a mat stamped with a pretty design was used, if the woman of the home was fortunate enough to have the money to buy one. Otherwise a brin bag, which had contained oats for the horse or corn for the hens, was washed, neatly hemmed, and marked with a design copied from another mat, or done in "hit or miss", which meant a little of each of the colors on hand.
