| Summary: | knap n NAP or PINCH - A short steep hill, especially not far from a pond. For example, to get a load of wood in winter from Strickland's Pond to the "Old Track", a public thoroughfare, the load had to be hauled up Jackie's Pinch, and to do this several men were needed - a cooperative effort - until every load reached the top. From Portrum's Gully to the top of the hill was another steep incline known as "Gully Nap." Once these two hurdles had been overcome a man could manage his own load, whether he used a _handslide _ or_ horse and slide_ . Either way, however, cooperation was needed, and even those who may have gone to fetch firewood, fence material or stage "longers" in pairs remained for a considerable time at the"foot" of the_ pinch_ or the _nap_ to help or be helped.
