Summary: | jackass n Many schooner-rigged vessels of 60-80 tons used for various fishing chores were turned into 'beaver hats' for the seal fishery, with one large temporary foremast topsail rigged to help through the ice and to back the vessel when jammed--larger 'jackass brigs' had topsails on all masts, though the variety of local rigs could blur the discinction.
