Description
Summary:heading vbl n A mitten knit to cover the hand only to the first joints of fingers and thumb. The thumb and first finger protrude through individual holes but the other three fingers protrude through the one hole. Only one such mitten is worn (on the right hand if the user is right handed or on the left if left handed.) It is worn only by the 'header' or the person who removes the gut and tears the head off the fish, in preparation for salting. It is worn not for warmth but to protect the hand, as in tearing the head from the fish sharp bones are exposed which would otherwise cut the hand. "The header is wearing a headen pam."
