Description
Summary:and _nineteen _and_ twelve_ People frighetend by supposed appear- ance of _Halley's Comet_; also afraid of thunder. I was down here, where that woman belong to now, in a place called (Brent's) Cove, and there was a man drownded there. 'Twas in the summer, see. Now.I don't exactly know /how long ago that would be, but I.I believe 'twas somewhere round nineteen an' twelve (ie 1912). Halley's Comet was on the sky, you know. And I was sat down in the house, myself an' my father, and in comes a woman, screechin' an' bawlin'! "My God! My God!" she said, "The /world's comin' to an end!" And.and the man jumped up, an' the woman jumped up, an' the /young- sters runned o(ut), and they all runned out o' doors! And when they went out o' doors /here was a _big cloud_ was comin' over the moon! Now, a big cloud runnin' over the moon, and they thought it was _Halley's Comet_ was come (to) destroy the world, 'cause that's what they said then: when Halley's Comet was on the sky, it was goin' to destroy the world, see. And they were all frightened to death about the comet; Now, was goin' to destroy the world. Oh yes, goin' to destroy. And when my father went out, this was what it was: a.a cloud, big hazy cloud, goin' over the moon. He had the moon darkened /in, see? People [were] frightened to death over (it?). Well now if they'd seen a televis- ion, or seen television now or seen a.airplane,sure,.they'd go.frightened to death! At them times if they, they hear a clap o' thunder you'd go hide in a basement down (in) A cellar somewhere another! 8 Hide away in a cellar! Yeah. .(They) used to hide the children away an' close up everything and get down (in) the basements and.in cellars, go down the cellars an' hide away till the thunderstorm was over! Well I.I mean, after all, years ago, (a) thunderstorm was bad, you know. 297 Used I Used I Withdrawn (?BRENT'S COVE) Checked by Jordyn Hughes on Wed 08 Jun 2016
