Summary:guffy Before I was ever allowed out in boat, in Spaniard's Bay, I would spend a lot of time down on the beach. One bit of fun we'd have down on the beach was jiggin' guffies. "Guffy" was our local terminology for sculpin, an ugly spring fish which lives around the shores of Nfld. Sculpins or Guffies as we used to call them, are scavengers and will eat just about anything that you throw in the water. They live on the bottom and only rise for food which they are sending towards them. All you need to catch them is a piece of strong line or string with a fish-hook attached. For bait just crack open a couple of snails and use the meat from these. Throw off your line and let it sink to the bottom. If there's a guffy nearby, you won't have to wait long before you have one ashore. After they were caught we usually used them for bait to catch other 'guffies.' I never heard of any one eating them. We used to leave them on the beach to rot. DNE-cit JH 2/72 Used I Used I 1 Used I
