Description
Summary:garden The high incidence of the term "meadow" in Freshwater fields reflects the dominant pattern of land use and crop rotation and it is significant that this appellation was predominant in field names not only in the St. John's study are but also on the Cape Shore since the periond of initial occupance. The word "garden" is also used in Freshwater, not alone to designate the small vegetable and fruit producing unit near the homestead but to fields as well Any cultivated area is termed a garden, but its retention as a permanent field name on some farms does not reflect any strong arabale tradition of divergence in the pattern of crop rotation.
