Summary: | gully There used to be a custom on Fair Island, Bonavista Bay, that every man had to be in his own home for supper on Xmas eve. Since this was the time when Xmas merriment usually began, all men did not reach their own house by supper time. Any man who was not home by this time was carried home on a _gully stick_ [PT]. A _gully_[PT] is a water barrel with a rope strap. This stick was pushed to the strap and this enabled two men to bring home a full barrel of water at one time. However, to be carried [reverse] the stick. The man being carried put his arm around the neck of the men carrying him. This was done with much laughter and fun making. Naturally, the men bringing the other man home would get a drink for his safe delivery in time for supper. DICT CEN. JW Used I and Sup Used I 3 Not used Nfld.
