Description
Summary:fish n I refer to the manufacture of fish-guano from fish offal. The French have invented a process by which the offal of all fish, and the coarse fish that are useless for food, can be converted into a fish-powder nearly as rich as the best Peruvian guano, equally transportable and possessed of the same fecundatory properties when employed in agriculture. The process is simple-the offal or fish are boiled-then subjected to pressure, in screw-presses, to extract as much as possible of the water and oil; then dried and reduced to powder which is found on analysis to contain 12 per cent of nitrogen and 14 per cent of bone earth. The French have had one (over) of these factories in operation for some years, at Quirpon, near the Strait of Belle-Isle, on the north east coast of Newfoundland; but its existence is all but unknown to Newfoundlanders, few if any of whom are aware of the invention.
