| Summary: | dieter n Years ago people used dogs instead of horses to haul wood in the winter. The dogs would feed fairly well during the winter months. When the spring came, however, those who had cod traps would ship a few men for the fishing voyage. When the time came for those men to be shipped people had this saying. The men would be called dieters because the man who shipped them would have to feed them for a few months.
