Description
Summary:dory The dory has been used in Gillams as long as anyone in the community can remember but in the last few years -- since about 1955 it has almost complete disappeared. It was used in the different fisheries but with the decline of the fisheries and also the introduction of the outboard motor to Bay of Islands, there is little use for the dory today. There are today - 19 February 1968 - just three of these dories in Gillams. These are seldom used, and when they are it is to "_boat home_" a load of driftwood for fire wood. Another important use of this dory up to about early 1950 was from bringing home "kelp" in the Spring [see other si de] [reverse] [image] _Paddles_ [image] [image] _12'-14' BOTTOM_ 4 1/2 WIDE [check] _DORY_ for use as fertilizer for planting of potatoes. Even this is no longer done today and the dory has not been able to compete with the outboard motor boat. The dark area on handle of "paddles" is leather to keep them from "chafing off." G. M.
