| Summary: | death n The sound of ticking (as of a clock) in the woodwork of a house foretold death. I do not know what caused the ticking sound, perhaps insects, but I often heard it. I was never convinced of this but [see also 'death watch beetle'] [reverse] older folks interpreted it to mean that someone's life was ticking away and, like a clock that was not rewound, would soon stop.
