Summary: | dwy The word "diohy," or "dwhigh" as it is someting spe lt, is now like that other word "livier" a Newfoundland classic and can be used with propriety by any Newfoundlander. One using these words cannot therefore be rightly ch arged with being either vulgar or illiterate. The word came to u s from Devonshire where it was in common use when I spent some time in that County in 1878. The Devonians used it alike to indicate a new shower and also a slight shower of rain. In derivation the word is probably Celtic, but it may be even of an older origin, viz, very ancient British. I have been told that it is also in use in some parts of the North of England. JH-26-11-69 Used I Not used Not used [see 'dwigh', etc.] This card is the same as file: D_14999, but this is under a different word form of 'diohy.' This form does not appear in the DNE under 'dwy.'
