dapper n This is a hook which is enclosed in a piece of lead , baited , and thrown out under the boat to catch surface fish. It is used in the early part of spring when the fish are "up" after caplin (ie the fish swim near the surface of the water to catch the caplin which habitually swim near the surface . I collected this from my father , aged 69 , who heard it used while growing up in New Bay .
