Summary:duff 1 n Box the Compass' - to say the 32 points of the compass in order and sometimes _immediately_ repeat the same backwards. It was usually a test of 'smartness' hurled by old fishermen at us young boys who were going to school. Also it was repeated by old fishermen & sailors to show others their knowledge of sailing. People of my grandfather's period took real pride in being Used I and Sup Not used Not used This is from a Newfoundland Folklore Survey card. This is side one of two.
