Description
Summary:dory The "dory-boat" was very common around Gillams area of Bay of Islands during late 1940s and early 1950s. This boat was in a sense, the one which marked the beginning of a new type of fishing. The larger boats (pages 2 of 3) were used in herring and other fisheries but by the late 1940 the herring fishery had almost ended. The emphasis began to be placed more on the salmon (inshore) and lobster fisheries. Thus a smaller type of boat was more adequate, and the fishermen began to put gasoline engines in their dories. These engines ranged from 3 h.p. to 5. h. p. Dories used for this were built larger than the new dory and much more [reverse] [image] [image] _14'-16' BOTTOM_ _A "DORY-BOAT"_ sturdy. The dory-boat gave way to the out-bound motor boat and is very rarely seen today. DNE-cit G. M.
