Description
Summary:common _Terminology_ (which caused confusion) While principal of St. Mary's School, (1958-62), I started a Parents' Club and had many of the mothers down from the Blackhead Road. We got on fine together, and yet I felt rather hurt when one after another, they used to tell me:- _'Missus, (or Ma'am), you're a real common woman'_, but obvious- ly they meant something different from what I understood by the words. I was enlightened by Jess Mifflin, who assure me that this was a great compliment (the opposite of what I had thought!) and that it meant that I was'very easy to get on with' or 'not snobbish or stuck-up'. We certainly need to understand each other's languages!! I have heard this word used in this way from 1958 onwards to the present time.
