I find it used in precisely our sense in E.B.White, Essays (N.Y., 1977), p. 72, in a 1975 essay 'Letter from the East' in which he gives a catalogue of woes: 'The price of gas at the pump. The price of doughnuts in the store. The power of the Federal Govt. The long shadow of the state. Drug abuse. Centralization' etc. etc; and the essay goes on to deal with the replace- ment of local village schools by large central schools and school buses, etc. etc. If we include we'd simply to giving our Nfld variant of a world wide process. Not _quite_ sure that the word has the explosive qual- ity it has here, but that may be my ignorance. G In R.Matthews study of centralization, resettlement, I don't find the people interviewed & quoted using these words. They use 'move', 'shift', 'drive us out' etc., but not usually the beaurocrat's terms. Query *Maybe omit ~, _but_, since we have _settlement_ n. VWK. include a few cites at _resettlement_? G.
