Description
Summary:crop n I distinctly remember the signing of the various Bowring crews a few days before March 10th, the sailing date, the fitting out of the sealers with their "crop" or advance of some nine or twelve dollars. This "crop" or advance consisted mainly of sealskin boots for each of the crew, some tobacco, oatmeal, sugar and raisins and some other necessities of comfort. The actual cost was nine dollars, but in view of the fact that the firm was taking a gamble on the venture, the sealers were charged twelve dollars or 33 1/2% more (over) [reverse] than the actual cost PRINTED ITEM G.
