Summary: | colony n The year 1831 is remarkable from the numerous petitions and memorials to the home government for constituting a permanent colony, by the institution of a "Local Legislature" for the island. These petitions were vehhemently opposed by the principal mercantile houses at home connected with the fisheries; and after long and patient discussion, a "Representative Assembly" was granted in 1832, which placed Newfoundland on par with the neighbouring provinces of Great Britain.
