| Summary: | caplin scull n The caplin scull, as Newfoundlanders call it, is one of the cardinal events of the year. It lasts from the end of June through the first two or three weeks of July, when vast numbers of eight-to-ten-inch fish, a species of ocean smelt, come to shore to spawn. They are washed up on the beaches by wave and tide, and while a few manage to wriggle and flip back to the surf, most of them remain stranded. PRINTED ITEM G.M.
