Summary: | bark (v) Each year before the nets were placed in the water for the season, fishermen "barked" their nets. Barking involved dipping the nets into a boiling tub of water which con/tained pieces of "bark" or "kutch", which were bought from the local merchant. This bark dissolved in the boiling water, and made a deep brown solution. When the fishing nets were dipped into this solution, they were coated with a brown covering, making them resistant to rot, and more difficult to see in the water. DNE-cit G. M.
