Description
Summary:blubber n Much codfish blubber soap was made, using wood ash lye. The houses where it was made stank to High Heaven, but it was part of the economy of the time and many dollars were saved on cleaning. It was a light brown colour. Soap was made from discarded pork rinds, grease skimmings from cooking pots and pieces of fatty substances that might be lying around. Tinned Gilletts Lye was used for this. It was a grayish colour, did not have an offensive odour, and was therefore an im- provement on the blubber . . . See cited quotation. PRINTED ITEM G.M.
