| Summary: | Frank "Mayo" Lind is one of the most recognizable names of all the Newfoundlanders who - participated in - World War I. His nickname "Mayo" resulted from a remark in one of his letters, which were published in - the St. John's newspaper The Daily News , concerning the lack of tobacco available to the - Newfoundlanders stationed in Scotland in 1915. That remark resulted in six separate campaigns in - Newfoundland to raise money to purchase local tobacco products to send to the Newfoundland troops, - free of charge. Mayo was the brand name of one of the tobacco products manufactured by the Imperial - Tobacco Company in St. John's. This small fonds includes three letters written to Maud Tucker of St. - Phillip's, Newfoundland, a friend of Lind's. There is a letter written to Lind by Tucker on May 27, 1916, - returned, unopened, with "MISSING Casualty Verified" stamped on the envelope.
