Caribou, a passenger ship which ran between North Sydney, Nova Scotia and Port-aux-Basques, Newfoundland was torpedoed by a German submarine in the early morning of October 14, 1942. Of the 238 passengers and crew, only 101 survived. Mary E. Crowley was a resident of Port-aux-Basques from 1940 until 1947.
