Summary:A publication of the Women's Patriotic Association (WPA) during the First World War, The Distaff's goal was "obtaining funds to help the Red Cross branch of the Women's Patriotic Association. We are truly a woman's paper, devoting our space to an account of the work done in various spheres by energetic wives and daughters in Newfoundland." (1916, p. 1) The success of the first issue in 1916 prompted a second one in 1917, and these are the only known issues. Includes advertisements. The title-word "distaff" refers to part of a spinning wheel, and is meant to symbolize the "women's sphere" or homefront (1916, title page).
