Summary: | Anglican missionary (and later priest) Oliver Rouse began this journal on a voyage from Newfoundland to England in 1846, completing it while he was a deacon in Bay de Verde in 1850. Oliver Rouse began his career as a missionary in Newfoundland, and was ordained an Anglican priest shortly after the completion of this journal in 1850. The journal entries written on Rouse's return to Newfoundland paint a clear picture of outport life. Having extensively researched the life of Oliver Rouse, his great grandfather, the editor Street has also added histories of both the Rouse family and that of Oliver's wife's family, the Damerels, including ancestors and descendants. Editor John Street has provided additions and corrections, which have been appended to the journal. Includes bibliographical references.
