| Summary: | 1st edition, 1927 printing. -- Written during the period between the two world wars, this book tackles the history and future implications of chemical manufacture and chemical warfare--major concerns to the allies as Germany held a monopoly on both at the time. At the crux of the issue is the question of whether chemical manufacture and warfare should be abandoned or expanded, as the world had both suffered and benefited from their use. Of note is the suggestion by Captain Cluny MacPherson of the Newfoundland Regiment to improve the gas mask by covering the whole head (p. 121). This was a vital improvement to the gas mask; 2.5 million were made using this design, and it was used as the basis for future models used until the end of the war.
