Notes that the senior Hakluyt was well acquainted with men who had been on voyages to Newfoundland, as well as men who saw the value of Newfoundland as a permanent colony; included is a letter from M. A. Parkhurst to the senior Hakluyt detailing Newfoundland's resources and the people who were availing of them. Indicates that this Hakluyt was also well aware of the value of colonization to control the waterways as well as natural resources. -- Introduction and notes by E. G. R. Taylor.
