Description
Summary:Henry Bayfield was a surveyor for the British Navy during the thirty year period covered in six journals published in two volumes. The introduction discusses the surveys of Newfoundland waters completed before Bayfield's own; his assessment of the relative merits of the work of Cook and of J. F. W. DesBarres; and discusses the work Bayfield subsequently completed for the Navy. In the first volume, Bayfield's references to Newfoundland are from the first of two main projects undertaken for the Navy. Bayfield was charged with completing a survey of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the St. Lawrence River, which meant surveying parts of the west coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. Of particular note is a journal entry on his time in Port Saunders, a harbor he considered one of the worlds's best (p. 263-264).
