Description
Summary:Henry Bayfield was a surveyor for the British Navy during the thirty year period covered in six journals, which were then published in two volumes. This second volume contains references to Newfoundland from two projects Bayfield undertook for the Navy during that time. Bayfield decided in 1844 to make chronometrical measurements that would allow for the accurate connection of the principal meridians of Quebec, Halifax, Nova Scotia, and St. John's Newfoundland. He was later charged with charting / surveying the area around Cape Pine, Newfoundland, to allow the Navy to determine the best place for a new lighthouse to be erected in the area, and also provided charts to assist in the laying of the electric telegraph cable between Prince Edward Island to Newfoundland.
