Summary: | "Being a complete and authentic narrative of the attempt to lay the cable across the entrance to the Gulf of St. Lawrence in 1855, and of the three Atlantic telegraph expeditions of 1857 and 1858" (title page). Mullally describes two separate international cable-laying projects. The first was to connect Newfoundland with Nova Scotia in 1855, which was successful. The second was the transatlantic cable linking Newfoundland and Ireland, attempted three times over 1857-58. Although initially a success as he describes, it failed one month after completion. A successful transatlantic cable was only put in place in 1866. Photocopy. -- Mullaly was special correspondent to the New York Herald, and as such was present at all the events described.
