Description
Summary:This is the history of the Church of England in Newfoundland. Brought to the island by the first Anglican clergy who were chaplains on John Cabot's expedition in 1497, the Church wasn't able to gain a strong foothold until the 17th century. A period of growth began in 1840, when Newfoundland's first bishop, Rev. Aubrey George Spencer, took office; the diocese of Newfoundland had finally become so large that it was restructured into three separate dioceses in 1976. Includes index.
