Description
Summary:This is the autobiography of Captain Richard Pelley, a seaman from Hants Harbour, NL. Told as a third-person narrative, Pelley begins by telling readers how he began his life at sea against his parents wishes as a young boy just out of school, only to be very nearly lost at sea on his first voyage. Over the course of his twenty years as both crewman and captain, Pelley experienced both hardships and adventures, many of which he tells the tales of in this book. Among the more noteworthy stories are those of how Pelley lost ships in storms, went to the ice to participate in the seal fishery, and also worked on ships laying and repairing transatlantic cables.
