The HMS Calypso Fonds consists of records relating to the ship's construction and later service with the Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve. -- Ship history: HMS Calypso built in 1881-3 as a British Navy corvette, later reclassified as a third-class cruiser; transferred to the Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve in 1902 as a training ship, docked in St. John's Harbour; renamed HMS Briton in 1916; decommissioned in 1922 and sold to Newfoundland merchantile firm A.H. Murray and Company, who used the hull for coal and salt storage; moved to Lewisporte in 1952, then towed in 1968 to a bay near Embree and burned, where it still lies derelict in the water.
