His father was John Chubbs, originally from Seal Bight, and his mother was Gertrude (nee Curl) of Deep Water Creek. His paternal grandparents were Archibald (b.1876) and Lavenia (b.1882) Chubbs. His maternal grandparents were John (b.1868 at Deep Water Creek)) and Susan (b.1877 at Sandy Hill). Cyril has two brothers: Warrick (1946-) and Graham (1930-) Chubbs.
