Summary:The Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education (1996) has issued policy documents to all schools, emphasizing collaboration in the delivery of services to students in the province. Educators are expected to implement collaborative practices in this delivery of services. In the absence of any direction within the policy documents, this paper addresses the educator's role when collaborating with school personnel. A brief history of collaboration within organizational structures is presented in order to interpret the current trend toward collaborative practices in school systems. A review of the literature clarifies the skills and the principles of collaboration within the context of consultation, team structures, and school reform initiatives. This paper provides educators with the information they require in order to enact collaborative practices, as outlined in government policy documents.
