Summary: | The use of fracking to recover oil and gas reserves is contentious, not just in Newfoundland and Labrador, but throughout the world. In 2013, Memorial University's Harris Centre had identified hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") as an important issue of public policy in this province, especially on the West Coast of Newfoundland. A number of citizens’ groups had arisen in the region as a result of proposals to undertake fracking developments, and the local media had devoted a significant amount of coverage to the issue. |
