Description
Summary:This chapter considers the regulation of petroleum activities in the Arctic. It examines the environmental threats that arise in oil and gas exploration and production in the Arctic, and the principles of regulating these petroleum activities. Following this, the chapter looks at the international, regional, and national legal tools used to prevent environmental harm, and in the event of an accident, to respond to harmful incidents. Attention is paid predominantly to consequential oil spills arising from a loss of well integrity, rather than environmental harm arising through petroleum operations.
