Summary: | Glacial striations on the Vestfold Hills (68 o 30'S 78 o E) record at least three phases of ice movement. During the last major advance of the ice sheet (Vestfold Glaciation) the hills were completely covered but Late Pleistocene fossiliferous sediments survived on Marine Plain. During retreat of the ice sheet a localised lateral advance of the Sorsdal Glacier (Chelnok Glaciation) occurred within the last 2000 years, leaving northerly striations superimposed on the regional west northwest set. Other sets of striae follow minor valleys, particularly in the vicinity of Lichen Lake. Retreat of ice and emergence of the land above sea level is indicated by widespread geomorphological features and by deposits of Holocene marine and non-marine fossils which have been extensively radiocarbon dated. |
