| Summary: | The purpose of this paper is to examine the locational implications of the emergence of competition in international telecommunications. Particular attention is focused on: the industry and international trade policies of major industrialised countries; the changing patterns of competition between fibre optic cables and communications satellites; the implications of competition for countries in the North Atlantic and the Asia-Pacific Regions; and the interrelationships between government policies in trade in services and competition in international telecommunications. This paper focuses on trade in electronic information services, these are of particular interest because they are being increasingly traded internationally.
