Summary:Social sustainability has been part of the sustainability debate in Sweden sincethe 1990s, and the disussions has both implied and excluded that physical aspectsaffect the matter. Recent research strenghtens that there is a connection betweenthe two. Both Swedish and international urban planning research regarding socialsustainability has been implemented on larger cities, but many of the Swedishpopulation are living in small or midsized cities. Social sustainability is about focusingon peoples needs and prerequisities, and therefore there is a need for studiesregarding the matter also in smaller cities. There has been a growing intrest insimplyfing the concept of social sustainability to be able to judge and discuss theidea with governing and active operators within the line of business. This masterthesis seeks to define and study the social sustainability matters within a small citydelimitation. It also seeks to create a useful planning tool. This to be able to clarifyand more exact define contents matter.The master thesis clarifies the meaning of the subject and the connections to thesmall city structure by identifying and study the subject on different levels of research.The overall definition of social sustainability can be said to be based uponseven different main concepts. These are welfare, justice, diversity, social capital,democracy, identity and time. These main concepts can be seemed to relate to sixdifferent main questions that relate to the city´s physical aspects. These main questionsare; simplified movement, nearness, increased integration, meetings betweenpeople, safty and social controll, and room for everyone. A breakdown into thesemain questions simplyfied the study and the assessment of the relation regardinghow the physical structure affect the social sustainability. These two levels ofconcepts were used for the planning tools main structure.
