Description
Summary:This master’s thesis was carried out during February to December of 2011 at LKAB. The purpose of this master’s thesis was to survey and analyze the interaction between the mining company LKAB and the contractors whose main operation is transporting waste rock and iron ore in the underground mines in Malmberget and Kiruna and to illustrate the distribution of responsibility between employer and co-ordinating. Data was collected by interviews with nine persons with different positions that were linked to contractors. The result of the work gives a better understanding of whom and what kind of responsibility the different participants have during a co-ordination. The investigation also gives recommendation to improve the co-ordination between LKAB and contractors in the areas: Purchasing, agreement and investment, Co-ordination, Education, Mine and vehicular traffic and Deviation reporting. The investigation suggests that LKAB should establish a safety-forum where representatives from both main contractors and sub-contractors are involved. In this forum they will perform a systematic work to ensure the safety environmental for the worker. The system of reporting must be streamlined and become a useful tool for contractors. It is also important to ensure the evidence in the event of breach of contract. The study also suggest that both LKAB and the contractors must take into account that there is a generation change among miners, and give the inexperienced workers more training in mine safety in several stages over a longer period. And furthermore perform realistic evacuation drills. The purpose is to give the employer the relevant information in order to continue its efforts to ensure the safety of workers underground.
