Description
Summary:The aim of the study was to examine what young adult Sami experience as health promoting in their lives. A total of three 18-year-old Sami participated. The method consisted of individual interviews, picture making and picture interpretation in a group. During the picture interpretation the participant gave the pictures key concepts, which were used as a basis in the theme creation. The text material was analyzed with a latent content analysis. The qualitative analysis resulted in five themes; Energiija – to recharge the batteries in the natural environment; Sápmelas – Sami in the soul, now and forever; Láhku – to thrive in the mountain land; Oktavuohta – strong ties strengthens me, and Eallit – exhilirated by life. The young Sami perceive physical activity, sleep, vitamin D and reindeer meat as health promoting. They feel pride and well-being in affirming the Sami culture. To be near the mountains and nature is regarded as an important source of freedom and good health. Family and friends are perceived as health promoting. Having a culture and a faith inspires confidence among the young Sami and guide them to find their meaning and identity. The findings of the study are discussed related to health guides’ role in health promotion. Validerat; 20140619 (global_studentproject_submitter)
