| Summary: | Smartphones are used increasingly and besides for calling and text messaging they are being used for listening to music, contact via social media, email etc. Törnros and Bolling (2005) showed that usage of a mobile phone can increase the risk of accidents, when driving a motorized vehicle. Can also the pedestrians’ usage of a mobile phone or a smartphone pose risks? The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the pedestrians’ risk-taking and their experience of incidents, when using a smartphone. Students at Luleå University of Technology answered an online survey and the results show that students who often use their smartphone when walking report most incidents and least attention towards the environment. When a choice between the completion of a task with a smartphone and continued movement is enforced both decisions are as common, which shows that decision conflicts may occur.
