Description
Summary:This essay is a study of how the personality trait ”introvert” is portrayed in the British tvseriesSherlock (2010-) and if it reproduces a stereotypical view on introverted persons. This was accomplished by a narrative analysis of the main characters on a base oftheories in narratology, construction of characters, representation, stereotypes andhegemony. To define what constitutes an introvert we applied theories in personalitypsychology on the fictional characters. In the stereotypical portrayal of an introverted character in popular culture the personsintroverted personality traits is often portrayed as negative ones. Those characters oftenlack charisma and are boring and plain. This is a long existing stereotype in the moviebusiness. This essay analyses the characters Sherlock Holmes and John Watson and theirnarrative and development on a base of introversion/extraversion. The results show thatthe portrayal of these introverted characters cannot be seen as stereotype. Both characters, like every human being, have been assigned both introverted and extraverted personalitytraits. Therefore you cannot reduce them to only one quality.
