Description
Summary:WHITE-TAILED EAGLE FORAGING BEHAVIOUR IN FISH PONDS Research analysis of how white-tailed eagle abundance and foraging behaviour in fish ponds, depends on environmental management factors. Data for abundance was collected in 2013, by the Nature research center, from 16 fish farms (312 ponds) with a total area of 6527 ha. Behaviour observation made in autumn of 2015–2016, and spring of 2016–2017, in 5 ponds of ,,Akvilegija” fish farm, total area 369 ha. The results showed that Lithuanian fish farms stand in 3 farm groups characterized by an abundance of white-tailed eagles, which depended on the different sizes of the ponds. Bird abundances and variations depended (75%) on fish ponds water areas and dates. Over the years (2015–2017), during seasons (spring, autumn) and during the day, the birds dominated a passive (sluggish) form of behaviour perching. This form of behaviour found more common in autumn, than in spring and compared to that towards the end of the seasons, there was an observed increase of hunting activity. In the spring eagles were seen to be more active (intensive hunting and flying) at noon than that in the autumn in the evenings.
