| Summary: | The paper focuses on the investigation and comparison of definitions of trees from English, Lithuanian, and Russian explanatory dictionaries. Three dictionaries were selected for the study - the first edition of the Macmillan English Dictionary (MED), the fourth edition of the Dictionary of Modern Lithuanian (DML), and the fourth edition of the Explanatory Dictionary of the Russian Language (EDRL) by S. I. Ozhegov and N. Yu. Shwedova. The article sets out to achieve the following objectives: to determine the most common types of definitions preferred by the dictionaries, to ascertain what features of a particular world fragment are reflected in the meanings of the analysed words, to compare and contrast English, Lithuanian, and Russian definitions of trees. The scope of the research is 310 definitions denoting names of trees: 89 examples from MED, 114 from DML, and 107 from EDRL. The collected examples were analysed by employing comparative analysis, componential analysis, descriptive analytical, and calculation methods. |
